Nick Gordon: Taking the Next Step
Last summer, Movin' The Chains caught up with Nick Gordon as he was coming off his junior season and continuing to make a name for himself on the recruiting trail.
A year later, Gordon enters his senior season at Cheraw with a different perspective. Now a four-year starter and one of the leaders of the Braves, he knows there is more expected of him, both on and off the field.
Gordon has continued to develop his game, putting an emphasis on route running, creating separation and understanding coverages. His work has also translated to the stopwatch, with Gordon recently clocking a 4.31 in the 40-yard dash at the National Under Armour Combine.
But for Gordon, the focus heading into his final high school season is bigger than individual numbers. He wants to help Cheraw make a deep playoff run, compete for a region championship and ultimately bring home a state championship.
We caught up with Nick again to talk about his growth, his role as a senior leader, his goals for Cheraw and what he is looking for at the next level.
The Growth
MTC: Since we last spoke, how would you describe the growth you've made as a player?
NG: As it pertains to growth, I am physically and mentally stronger. I've gained lean muscle and I've focused on getting better at the nuances of the game, such as precise route running, consistently creating separation and being able to read and understand coverages.
MTC: Looking back at your junior season, what are you most proud of?
NG: Becoming a complete player, and being named to the High School Junior Blitz All-Star Game. This game showcases the best juniors in the state. Also, being named the Offensive Player of the Year for our Region. These accomplishments motivate me to continue to hone my craft so I am a continued asset to the team.
MTC: What part of your game has improved the most since last season?
NG: I have really focused on route running. I continue to work with Coach Gary Green to train and advance my game. I have improved my speed. My 40 time was clocked at the National Under Armour Combine at 4.31. I have ran in the 4.3's all summer.
Senior Season
MTC: What areas are you continuing to focus on before senior season?
NG: I will continue to get bigger, faster, stronger. As a senior, I'm razor focused on preparing for the next phase in my career, coupled with focusing on having the most team success this year. I want to make my senior season the best season so far and make a deep run in the playoffs. As a team, we are focused on going 1-0 each week, win the region, and win a state championship. Personally, I would like to be named to the Shrine Bowl and receive All-State honors. Also be named 1A Player of the Year for SC.
MTC: What does success look like for Cheraw this fall?
NG: We have the opportunity to be really good. We have an improved offensive and defensive line. We have some good skill guys as well.
MTC: How has your leadership role changed heading into your final season?
NG: As a senior now and a four-year starter I am going to be looked at as a team leader. I understand the mission this year.
MTC: What has your offseason preparation looked like?
NG: My off-season preparation has been working with my WR trainer, staying in the weight room, watching game film from last year, and taking care of my body.
The Next Level
MTC: How have you handled the increased attention from college programs?
NG: Stay humble and continue to work hard. I always want to thank my support system for all they do for me to be in this position. My family, church family and friends.
MTC: What are you looking for in the next level opportunity?
NG: I am looking for an opportunity to compete early and play in my first year, while continuing to improve each day. Culture of the program is very important, as well as my relationship with my position coach, Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach. All these will play a major factor in where I decide to sign on Signing Day in December or February. Until then, I am just trusting the process.
MTC: What do you want college coaches to know about you heading into your senior season?
NG: I want college coaches to continue to see a great player who plays the game with passion and looks for every opportunity to get better each day. I am a high character guy and student athlete. I will bring a wealth of talent to any college football team and can contribute on offense, defense and special teams.
One Final Run At Cheraw
For Nick Gordon, his senior season is about making the most of one final opportunity at Cheraw while continuing to prepare for what comes next.
He enters the season with plenty of individual goals, but his focus remains on team success and being the kind of player his teammates can rely on. At the same time, the recruiting process continues to move forward as he looks for the right opportunity at the next level.
The work has already been put in. Now Gordon gets the chance to put it all together for his final high school season.
The next chapter is getting closer, but first, there is still plenty left to accomplish in a Cheraw uniform.
