Chapin vs Brookland-Cayce

The Eagles of Chapin had their homecoming celebration on Friday night inside a packed Cecil Woolbright Stadium. Before I say anything else, I want to congratulate Aubree Suber on being named the 2023 Chapin High School Homecoming Queen.

Chapin has thought about this game since last year. Last year, Brookland-Cayce beat Chapin in Cayce. Chapin did not forget about that night.

This game started slowly as both team’s defenses stepped up big. Chapin finally got the lid off the can with a field goal about halfway through the quarter. That would be the only score in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a whole different story. Just four seconds in, Chapin brought in the wildcat package, and Tanner Short got into the endzone to make it 10-0. Three minutes later, Brady Alboro found Maddox Floyd to extend the Eagle lead to 17. They were not done yet, as four minutes later a screen pass from Alboro to Kai Fennell went to the house. Just like that it was 24-0. With under 30 seconds left in the first half, Brogan Sox would launch the 50-plus yard pass to William Young to get Brookland-Cayce on the board. They would go into the locker room with Chapin leading 24-7.

The Bearcats' late second quarter touchdown gave them momentum as they would add a field goal by John Allen Mower to make it 24-10. Four minutes later, it would be William Young again with an incredible catch in the back of the endzone to make it a one score game. Chapin would finally answer as Alboro’s pass went to Khalen Bostic for the 43-yard touchdown to force the lead back to two possessions. With 12 minutes left to play, Chapin still had the lead 31-17.

Chapin was not done yet as they got a stop and Tanner Short would take it into the endzone for his second touchdown of the night and to add to the lead. The Bearcats would not go down easy as William Young scored a rushing touchdown for his third touchdown of the night to make it a 14-point game. The Bearcats would try the onside kick and fail but end up forcing a fumble to get it back. With two minutes left in the game, guess who, William Young runs it into the endzone for his fourth touchdown of the night to get the game back to one possession. They would try an onside kick but fail to recover. Chapin would run out the clock and find a way to escape 38-31 over Brookland Cayce.

Brookland-Cayce now boasts a record of 2-2, and they will return home on Friday to host Hampton County. Chapin now has an overall record of 4-1, and they will head across Columbia to AC Flora next Friday in Week 5.
